Portrait of ONAH

The story

There is a sound that lives between the pulse of Lagos and the wide-open skies of the American South — a sound that carries the weight of ancestry and the urgency of tomorrow. That sound belongs to Francis Onah — known to the world as ONAH — a Nigerian-born, U.S.-based saxophonist, keyboardist, and percussionist whose music is a living bridge between the African continent and the global stage.

Raised in the electric sprawl of Lagos, ONAH's musical awakening came as a teenager — ignited by the revolutionary spirit of Fela Kuti, the visionary fire of Femi Kuti, and the masked mysticism of Lagbaja. He heard in their music something ancient and unfinished: a conversation between rhythm and resistance that demanded his voice. When he bought his first trumpet, it wasn't simply an instrument — it was a calling.

He devoted years to mastering the brass before the saxophone called to him with its deeper, more soulful resonance. The transition revealed what would become his signature — a tone drenched in warmth, spiritual depth, and the unmistakable textures of West Africa.

Drawing from the same wellspring as his heroes and contemporaries — Richard Bona, Manu Dibango, and Hugh Masekela — ONAH crafts a sound that defies easy categorization. His compositions weave improvisation with global rhythms, rich harmonies, and percussive grooves rooted in the motherland. The result feels both timeless and urgently present — a genre unto itself.

His artistry has not gone unnoticed. ONAH's 2025 album, Still Standing, earned a “For Your Consideration” campaign for Best Global Music Album at the Grammys, and he was named a Top 5 finalist on America's Next Hit Maker 2025. He has shared stages and studios with the legendary Femi Kuti, the incomparable Yinka Davies, Funsho Ogundipe, and Seyi Solagbade, and has captivated audiences at the Alkebulan Concert (ALKCON) in Dallas, festivals across Lagos, and The Freeman Cafe.

At the heart of his work is a spiritual conviction: that melody can awaken cultural memory. Through poignant ballads and soaring improvisations, ONAH invites the world to lend its ear as he graces it with the beauty of Africa — one note at a time.

The journey is far from over. With new singles Blues Corner and Market Square on the way, a West Africa tour on the horizon, and his next album Still Rising arriving at the end of Q3 2026, ONAH keeps climbing. From Still Standing to Still Rising, the ascent continues.
